SPOTLIGHT: ASHES AND ASPHALT - TREVOR HALLOWAY + CHARACTER INTERVIEW!

Death might not stop "Wild" Bill Byrne from going to Sturgis, but his sons might.

Estranged brothers Mike and Kyle Byrne have five days and thousands of miles to cover to bring their dad's ashes to the annual bike rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. If they can survive the road, then they just might honor Bill's last request...unless they kill one another first in, “Ashes and Asphalt” by Trevor Halloway.

Purchase:

Please be sure to check out my interview with "Wild" Bill Byrne himself!

What first drew you into motorcycle riding?
My old man took me one weekend to see "The Wild Ones." He bought a second hand bike, which we both worked on. Pop rode it every chance he got and he taught me the ins and outs. Learned how to fix an engine before I got to high school. I found a few like-minded folks and rode with them…using Dad's bike for a month before he found out!

What were Michael and Kyle like as kids? Are they still the same now or are they different?
Mikey's a lot like his mom. Does a lot of thinking…sometimes too much. He's got a bit of a free spirit in him, which I had tried to instill. Kyle takes more after me, for better or worse. We're both stubborn and think we know what's right.

What is the wildest thing that has happened to you at Sturgis?
Waking up in the woods, wearing only a red trucker hat and holding a bottle of Jim Bean. I'd go into further detail, but there might be kids reading this.

If there is one lesson that you hoped your sons learned from their journey to Sturgis, what would it be?
Trust your family. They'll be there to bail you out when everyone else drops out. You might get frustrated with them, but in the end…family is all you got.

Do you have any regrets about the way you raised your sons? If so, what would you have done differently?
There are always things you wish you had done differently. I had a time raising them after their mother died and if anything, I would've spent more time with them. I would've taught Mikey to be more adventurous and Kyle to hit the books more. But they did alright for themselves.

Tell us why they call you “Wild Bill”.
Trevor wrote the reason why in his book. You gotta buy it to find out.

If you had lived to go to Sturgis another year, what would your time there have been like?
More of the same probably (laughs). You gotta grab life and live it, else you wind up in an urn with plenty of regrets.

Why is Charlie your best friend?
Charlie's bailed me out of more than a few scrapes and I did the same for him. We've known each other since he was in high school and hanging around with the old crew.

What would you tell your sons if you were still alive?
What in the hell am I doing in this urn! (laughs). I'd remind them that blood is thicker than water.

What one myth about bikers isn’t true?
Not every biker is a 1%er…and even some of them aren't 1%ers (just ask Mr. Queen)

What is biker Heaven like?
You've heard the term, 'milk and honey'? It's more like 'beer and honies'! Thought in death did me and the old lady part, we're still together up here. Every day we ride and every night we…listen to some rocking tunes.

About the Author

My name is Robert Taylor, but I write under the nom de plume, Trevor Halloway…even if Amazon and a few other venues misspell the name.  I wrote “Ashes and Asphalt” due to my love of the motorcycle world and used family lore to help shape the story. My father, uncle, and aunt were enthusiasts, though I have yet to earn a license.

The book has recently won two awards. The most recent one was from the Colorado Independent Publishers Association. I earned a merit award under the category, Family and Relationships.

Excerpt-

Open your eyes... no, no wait. Okay, deep breath, ready... almost. I might have had a bit too much to drink last night, fine then I was pissed, but so was Tomás, I think. Actually I can’t be sure about that either because Tomás ‘Pez’ Carrera—the gorgeous goalkeeper for the Santa Ana Saints soccer team—has a lot more experience than me at having a drink or ten. And now I was lying in a room that definitely wasn’t mine; in a bed with someone next to me; and, it was time to turn and face the music. On the upside, at least I was still wearing my underwear.
God please let it be Tomás next to me—I’ll go to church every Sunday for a month, honest. Good grief, now I was attempting to bribe God... I had sunk to a whole new low. It was the hangover or at least I think I had a hangover... can you get a hangover from four or five margaritas? I wasn’t a big drinker and I had never really been absolutely shit-faced drunk so a hangover would be a first.
I consoled myself that it had been a night of firsts, but I kept one of the firsts for another time. Damn it. I took a shallow breath so I didn’t wake the person next to me. Just get it over with.
I rolled over slowly and... what the fuck?

Character Name:  Tomás Carrera

Character Bio:
He’s the hottest goalie on the planet— Tomás Carrera has arrived at the Santa Ana Saints and the Latin lover is not only talented, he’s as hot as they come. Growing up with a single mom and as the eldest of five siblings, Tomás has had to be responsible all his life. Now his super star soccer status has provided for his family and allowed him to let his hair down… and that’s just what he’s doing with a playing contract in place, a Ducati to ride, and a new girlfriend on his arm.

Describe yourself what is your worst and best quality?
I am very good at soccer and hopefully Alice would say very good in bed J. Worst quality… I might be a little possessive.

What is the one thing you wish other people knew about you?
I didn’t call off my relationship because I became a ‘soccer star’. It just ran its course and I said goodbye to my childhood sweetheart and moved on.

What is your biggest secret something no one knows about?
My father cleared out when I was twelve, just let. I saw him again recently—he was at one of my games. He locked eyes with me and I turned away. I haven’t told anyone in my family.

What are you most afraid of?
Getting injured and having my marriage breakdown, when I get married. I want to be married forever. Like the song goes, “When I fall in love, it will be forever.”

What do you want more than anything?
To love what I do and to be loved.

What is your relationship status?
I’m going out with Alice. Exclusively.

How would you describe your sense of fashion?
I get a lot of good clothes from my sponsors, so I don’t have to work to hard at getting the latest clothes to suit me.

How much of a rebel are you?
When I moved to Santa Ana from Buenos Aires, I might have been a bit out of control. It was the first time I had real freedom… no family, no responsibility. I had money, fame, plenty of sex on tap and a Ducati. I don’t know if I’m a rebel, but I just wanted to do my own thing for a while and have some good times.

What do you considered to be your greatest achievement?
Getting an international soccer contract and getting Alice. I’m working hard on keeping both pumping J

What is your idea of happiness?
A great game on the field and a great night in the bedroom.

What is your most treasured possession?
My black Ducati motorbike. I love feeling it between my legs and the power of the ride.

What is the quality you most like in a man?
Standing up and doing what’s right.

What are the qualities you most like in a woman?
Strength and femininity.

Who is your favorite hero in fiction?
Bond, James Bond. So smooth and in control. He always comes out on top.

Which living person do you most admire?
David Beckham. He just has it all together… success, a great career, a family—he’s made a great career from his talents and looks.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?
I wish I could be better at public appearances. I don’t like crowds and I don’t like being singled out. Bit hard at the moment when I’m recognized a lot.

What is your motto?
Don’t forget your past, but embrace the future.

EXCERPT:

“What do I do about Sean?”

“What about him?” Mike asked.

“I think I’ve fallen in love with him.”

“Okay, I know this is a female thing.” He started to leave.

“Honey, sit down.” DeeDee patted his leg.

“You know I’m no good with the dating stuff,” he pleaded with DeeDee.

“I know, but you’re his friend.”

He took a deep breath. “He’s a great guy, but you already know that. And you probably know how much Francesca hurt him. Has he given you any reason to think he may feel the same?”

“Kyla, forgive my husband. Honey, you’re right, I’ll handle this. Go check on Michelle.”

“Thank you.” He stood up, “Kyla, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Thank you Mike or is it Pastor?”

“It’s still Mike. We’re friends, remember.” He smiled and walked down the hall.

“Okay, tell me everything,” DeeDee urged.

“I can’t get him out of my head. He told me he was going on a blind date and I got upset. And after I told him I broke up with my boyfriend and how hurt I was, he came over with ice cream. Well, gelato. It’s one of the things we like to do, eat gelato. We meet twice a week for coffee and lunch, and occasionally we go to dinner or brunch. And when I’m not feeling well, he comes over with groceries and rubs my feet and takes care of me and Winnie. Then he drove me to my parents and stayed with us the weekend. He said I needed to be around my family. He and my mother have become friends.” She chuckled. “I think they’ve been conspiring to get me to change.”

“I think it’s pretty safe to say, he feels the same way.”
