VIRTUAL TOUR: DOS ANGELES - MICHAEL O'HARA + EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!!

DOS ANGELES
by Michael O'Hara

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:
Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Dos Angeles, the first in a franchise of mysteries featuring Paco Moran, puts the multicultural thirty-something ex-LAPD homicide detective turned reluctant private eye on the trail of a beautiful young Latina on the run with ten million dollars in cash. Half Anglo and half Mexican, Moran is a transitional character equally at home working in Beverly Hills or blue collar Boyle Heights, the tough East Los Angeles neighborhood where he was raised by a single mom. In his debut case Paco quickly learns he will be the fall guy if he doesn't track down the young immigrant who allegedly stole a small fortune from a sleazy Hollywood producer secretly laundering money for a notorious drug cartel. Paco's frantic search takes him on a roller-coaster ride through a shadowy place he calls Dos Angeles a city within the city and a virtual country unto itself.

EXCERPT:

Dante Pirelli thought the timing could not have been better to get out of town and spend a week in Maui at the oceanfront condo he owned on Kaanapali Beach. For days all the local media could talk about was the potentially record-breaking heat about to hit Southern California. Temperatures in downtown Los Angeles were expected to soar above a hundred, and out on the western edge of the San Fernando Valley where Pirelli lived it would probably be ten to fifteen degrees hotter.

An added benefit was that Vyna, his beautiful young trophy wife, was excited about getting away, too. That meant there could be lots of sex on the holiday agenda. Vyna had been suffering with a bad case of the blues lately, but when she was in a good mood she could be a real tiger in bed.

Just as the stretch limousine arrived that would take him and his family to the airport, Pirelli gave a final briefing to Maria Rojas, the young woman he was leaving behind in charge of his sprawling, Tuscan-style estate.

“Remember, always keep ice in the dog’s bowl. And make sure you’re here for the gardeners and pool man. Any problems with anything you got the numbers to call.”

“Yes, sir,” Maria nodded with a nervous smile. Although confident, she could handle everything expected of her she was anxious about being left alone in such a big, fancy house. Still, she was going to be paid double her normal salary and Mr. Pirelli had said she could use any of the home’s resort-like amenities, including an amazing circular pool with a cascading waterfall and thirty-foot water slide.

Six days into her stay Maria’s only real challenge had been coping with the boredom. Outside of taking care of Mrs. Pirelli’s needy French Pug and dealing with the regularly scheduled service people, there had been very little to do. As predicted, the scorching weather the Spanish press was calling Los Días de Infierno had arrived with a vengeance. It was so hot during the day she rarely went outside, and she soon got tired of watching non-stop telenovelas. All the idle time made her realize how much she missed her regular routine at Mr. Pirelli’s film company. She liked how busy it always was and how the hours just seemed to fly by. Work—like prayer—kept her from worrying about her recent troubles.

Emmy nominee Michael O’Hara-- who has written and produced some of the highest-rated television movies and miniseries in recent memory – is adding author to his resume with the August, 2015 the publication of his first novel,  Dos Angeles.

The book, featuring a bilingual and bicultural private eye named Paco Moran, centers around Moran’s desperate search for a beautiful young Latina immigrant who stole ten million dollars from the mob. In a pre-publication review American Book Award winner Peter Quinn said: Paco Moran’s debut in Michael O'Hara's Dos Angeles is fast-paced, finely crafted, and full of surprises. It's noir fiction for the 21st century, a helluva ride from the first page to last. Here's hoping O'Hara brings Paco back very soon. I can't wait!

A former award-winning journalist and NBC Vice President of Media Relations, O’Hara made an auspicious debut as a writer/producer with “Those She Left Behind,” a critically acclaimed family drama that continues to be the highest-rated TV movie (25.1/38 share) on any network in over twenty years. That success was followed by the widely praised NBC movie “She Said No” which won an American Women in Radio & Television Award for Best Television Dramatic Special.

He was also the writer and executive producer of “Murder in the Heartland,” a celebrated ABC miniseries which garnered a Casting Society of America Award and two Emmy nominations. Right after that he created and executive produced the first of 22 “Moment of Truth” movies for NBC, establishing one of the most successful film franchises in TV history.

O’Hara also wrote “She Woke Up Pregnant,” the pilot for ABC’s ‘Crimes of Passion’ franchise. It scored an impressive 13.4 rating and 21 share, making it the highest-rated ABC movie of the year. He went on to write “One Hot Summer Night,” another ‘Crimes of Passion’ thriller that was ABC’s highest-rated Thursday night movie of the season. Other producing credits include two CBS projects: “Twilight Zone – Rod Serling’s Lost Classics” and “A Child’s Wish,” which was filmed in the Oval Office and featured a cameo appearance by then President Bill Clinton. In addition he wrote and executive produced NBC’s “In His Life: The John Lennon Story” and “1st to Die,” a two-part NBC miniseries based on the best-selling novel by James Patterson.

Overall O’Hara has produced four miniseries and 33 Movies of the Week. Besides his Emmy nomination, other honors include: a Christopher Award (“A Child’s Wish”); a Prism Award (“The Accident”); a Humanitas Award nomination (“Heart of a Child”); a National Easter Seal Society Award (“To Walk Again”); an International Health & Medical Film Award (“Heart of a Child”); and the Media Award from The National Council on Problem Gambling (“Playing to Win.”)

Review:
** I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Any thoughts and opinions are my own.**

Pleasant Day was an interesting book and I'm glad I was given the opportunity to review it. The characters in this book are complex and most of them are harboring secrets that they don't want anyone to ever find out. Living in a small town threatens that pipe dream, though, because everyone knows just about everyone.

I really liked the dynamic between Pleasant and Clarissa. It was like a grandmother-granddaughter situation which fit well with the book. Pleasant has seen a lot in her young life and Clarissa is able to help her process and develop as a character. Just when I thought I knew how things were going to turn out, something else I wasn't expecting happened to take the story into a whole other direction. The twists and turns in this book will keep you gripping the pages until the very end!

REVIEW: Agamemnon Must Die - Hock G. Tjoa

***Disclaimer: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Any thoughts and opinions are my own.***

To sail against Troy, Agamemnon sacrificed his virgin daughter Iphigenia. Ten years later, he returns victorious, hoping that Queen Clytemnestra has forgiven him. He is so wrong.

The royal family of Mycenae has a bloody, monstrous history. Agamemnon returns with his war trophy, the Trojan Princess Cassandra whom he unthinkingly flaunts before his queen. After an epic sword fight in his own banquet hall, Agamemnon is killed. Cassandra has her nightmares/visions of the gory and unspeakable deeds of the House of Atreus; she is led away to be executed. Clytemnestra and her lover Aigisthus have their respective reasons, but this regicide must be avenged. Or so say the voices in Orestes' head. He must avenge his father. He must kill the regicides. He must kill his own mother.

But killing one's own mother would break the greatest of ancient taboos and would result in even more voices in his head. Are they just voices? Can they be placated?

Agamemnon Must Die is a retelling of Aeschylus' Oresteia. I definitely recommend reading the author notes in front of the book if you are not that familiar with Greek mythology and works written about it. I am ashamed to say that the last time I really read something that dealt with Greek mythology was in my English 101 class in college. I had to take notes to make sure I could keep up with who was who and who killed who and why they killed them. It's a lot to keep up with if you do not know anything about Greek mythology.
I did thoroughly enjoy this book because it was more entertaining than it felt like getting a history lesson. Hock G. Tjoa definitely did his research and it shows in his writing. His characters are well-developed and you understand their motives and passions easily. Clytemnestra, Agamemnon's wife, has never been able to forgive Agamemnon for sacrificing their daughter Iphigenia by order of the gods during a time of war. She's very modern in her thinking that women are important too and shouldn't be treated as mere property. I really admired this about her character. When Aigisthos, Clytemnestra's lover while Agamemnon is off fighting Troy, reveals to her that he finally wants to avenge his brothers' deaths on behalf of his father they begin to formulate a plan to kill Agamemnon.
One thing I liked about this book is that it like most tragedies, there are no actions without consequences. Aigisthos and Clytemnestra planned on telling the elders they killed Agamemnon and then simply abdicating the throne and handing it over to Clytemnestra's son Orestes. Orestes and his sister Elecktra were sent to live with their aunt while their father was away fighting in Troy. Because he had been gone for so long, when they heard of their father's death, neither of them really knew how to feel. Neither of them really knew their father at all. Vengeance of their father's death had not crossed either of their minds until the god Apollo starts giving Orestes visions and terrible nightmares that are telling him to kill his mother. Orestes will is tested as he questions the gods.
As far as the actual writing of this book, I liked that it changed from different character points of view in order to give you a more rounded idea of the story. I felt like some things in the dialogue were more for the reader's benefit than the actual character but that didn't really bother me too much since I was grateful to be clued in on all of the Greek scandals. This was a great, fast paced read and I definitely recommend it to anyone interested in history, Greek mythology, or just a good scandalous story.

Review: Seven Days and Six Worst-case Scenarios - Leslie Huggans + $10 Amazon or B/N Gift Card Giveaway!!!

Mix dry wit with a juicy corpse and let it simmer over a red hot romance to serve up a wicked comedy.

Curious, quirky, crisis consultant Victoria Douglas needs a vacation, and to learn to keep her sassy mouth shut. Instead, she’s gunning a stolen SUV up a mountain with beer cans and bug spray as her only weapons in a fight for survival. She and her investigative reporter friend, Julie Tran, have landed in a Caribbean vacation crap-sandwich bursting with murder, narcotics, and one gorgeous piece of man-flesh.

College flame, Alex Marshall, professed his love and disappeared without a trace. Twelve years later he materializes at Victoria’s resort on St. Kitts and he’s got more charm and sex appeal than ever. Tingling lady bits and long-buried feelings aside, Victoria discovers she and Julie are at the center of a criminal conspiracy that stretches across two continents. They’ve got one chance to prove their innocence before competing nefarious factions feed them to the fish…or worse. Victoria has to decide just how far she is willing to go to save her life and mend her heart.

Excerpt
If I hadn’t been fighting for my life with beer cans, bug spray, and pent-up aggression as my only weapons, you probably wouldn't want to read about me. After all, a thirty-something woman with two cats and a boss who can’t keep his hands off his crotch is rarely worth noticing. But, this woman was gunning a stolen SUV up a mountain goat path with a monkey in the back seat screeching “Kek-kek-kek.” His owner was screaming something about his own head colliding with the roof. My friend Julie was in the passenger’s seat ordering me to slow down. Good thing I was accustomed to people complaining about my driving because we had much larger issues than my dislike for the brake pedal.

Review:

I will DEFINITELY be reading the next book in this series! I have to know what happens to Victoria and her crazy, long-lost lover!

Victoria decides she needs a vacation. Her first clue that vacation was not going to go as planned is when she tries to help stop an escaped criminal as soon as she gets to her Caribbean Island getaway. Now that she's on a bad guy's radar he's trying to take her take down. When he ends up dead, she's the first suspect! Throw in a complicated love story full of heartbreak and disappointment with an ex-lover who is up to his eyeballs in missing DEA agents and is in the possession of something valuable to the Columbian drug cartel and you've got a recipe for vacation disaster!

The banter between Victoria and her old flame, Alex is one of the best parts of this book for me. The characters are well developed and will have you laughing out loud. The mix of Victoria's dry wit and Alex's seriousness proves that opposites do attract and that some flames will burn forever. Poor Victoria cannot catch a break during her island adventure but there is never a dull moment in this story! With lots of double-dealing and plot twists, you'll be hanging on the edge until the very end.

I cannot wait to read the rest of this series!!
