Author: Grace Burrowes
Release Date: August 4, 2015
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Genre: Historical Romance

Summary

He's had everything he could ever want...until now

Wealthy wool magnate Tremaine St. Michael is half French, half Scottish, and all business. He prowls the world in search of more profits, rarely settling in one place for long. When he meets practical, reserved Lady Nita Haddonfield, he sees an opportunity to mix business with pleasure by making the lady his own.

Nita Haddonfield has a meaningful life tending to others, though nobody is dedicated to caring for Nita. She insists the limitations of marriage aren't for her, then Tremaine St. Michael arrives-protective, passionate, and very, very determined to win Nita's heart.

Excerpt – Tremaine’s True Love

Wealthy businessman Tremaine St. Michael has concluded that marriage to Lady Nita Haddonfield would be a prudent merger of complimentary interests for the mutual benefit and enjoyment of both parties… or some such blather.

Tremaine rapped on Lady Nita’s door, quietly, despite a light shining from beneath it. Somebody murmured something which he took for permission to enter.

“Mr. St. Michael?”

Tremaine stepped into her ladyship’s room, closed the door behind him and locked it, which brought the total of his impossibly forward behaviors to several thousand.

“Your ladyship expected a sister, or a maid with a pail of coal?”

“I wasn’t expecting you.” Lady Nita sat near the hearth in a blue velvet dressing gown. The wool stockings on her feet were thick enough to make a drover covetous. “Are you unwell, Mr. St. Michael?”

“You are not pleased to see me.” Did she think illness the only reason somebody would seek her out?

She set aside some pamphlet, a medical treatise, no doubt. No vapid novels for Lady Nita.

“I was not expecting you, sir.”

“You were not expecting me to discuss marriage with you earlier. I wasn’t expecting the topic to come up in a casual fashion either. May I sit?”

She waved an elegant hand at the other chair flanking the hearth. Tremaine settled in, trying to gather his thoughts while the firelight turned Lady Nita’s braid into a rope of burnished gold.

“You are pretty.” Brilliant place to start. The words had come out, heavily burred, something of an ongoing revelation.

“I am tall and blond,” she retorted, twitching the folds her of her robe. “I have the usual assortment of parts. What did you come here to discuss?”

Lady Nita was right, in a sense. Her beauty was not of the ballroom variety, but rather, an illumination of her features by characteristics unseen. She fretted over new babies, cut up potatoes like any crofter’s wife, and worried for her sisters. These attributes interested Tremaine. Her madonna-with-a-secret smile, keen intellect, and longing for laughter attracted him.

Even her medical pre-occupation, in its place, had some utility as well.

“Will you marry me, my lady?”

More brilliance. Where had his wits gone? George Haddonfield had graciously pointed out that Nita needed repose and laughter, and Tremaine was offering her the hand of the most restless and un-silly man in the realm.

The lady somehow contained her incredulity, staring at her hands. “You want to discuss marriage?”

“I believe I did just open that topic. Allow me to elaborate on my thesis: Lady Bernita Haddonfield, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? I think we would suit, and I can promise you would know no want in my care.”

A proper swain would have been on his damn bended knee, the lady’s hand in his. Lady Nita would probably laugh herself to tears if Tremaine attempted that nonsense. Lady Nita picked up her pamphlet, which Tremaine could now see was written in German.

“Why, Mr. St. Michael?”

“I beg your pardon?” Tremaine was about to pitch the damned pamphlet in the fire, until he recalled that Nita Haddonfield excelled at obscuring her stronger emotions.

“Why should you marry me, Tremaine St. Michael? Why should I marry you? I’ve had other offers, you’ve made other offers. You haven’t known me long enough to form an opinion of my character beyond the superficial.”

This ability to take a situation apart, into causes, effects, symptoms, and prognosis was part of the reason she was successful as a healer. Tremaine applied the same tendencies to commercial situations, so he didn’t dismiss her questions as coyness or manipulation.

She wasn’t rejecting him either. She most assuredly was not rejecting him.

Message From the Author

What makes a man a gentleman?

For a romance writer, this question has to be answered in every book, because implicit in the term “hero” is something of the gentleman. Heroes need not be charming, handsome or wealthy, and they might not even be obviously heroic, at least at the start of the book, but they have to be worthy of our loyalty for the duration of an entire book.

In the True Gentlemen series, I took three men who’d wandered across my pages in previous stories—Tremaine St. Michael, Daniel Banks, and Willow Dorning—and found them each a happily ever after. Tremaine is a flinty business man, Daniel is poor and pious, Willow finds polite society an enormous trial and would far rather be with his dogs. These fellows were not obvious choices as romance heroes, but they each had something that tempted me to write stories for them.

When we met Tremaine in an earlier book (Gabriel: Lord of Regrets), Tremaine was convinced that he’d found a good candidate for the position of wife. He offered marriage, listing all the practical advantages to both parties, and he congratulated himself on how much sense his proposed union would make.

The lady turned him down flat, and as a gentleman is bound to do, he graciously ceded the field. He didn’t like it, he didn’t entirely understand how or what he’d lost, but he wished the happy couple well.

Daniel’s role in David: Lord of Honor was to charge to London with sermons at the ready in an attempt to restore his sister’s honor. The very man Daniel accused of wronging that sister had already set her back on the path to respectability.

Oops. But again, being a gentleman, Daniel wishes the couple every happiness, even if doing so costs him the future he’d envisioned for himself and his loved ones. Like Tremaine, he’s a gracious and even dignified loser.

Willow’s appearance in Worth: Lord of Reckoning is brief, but he too is determined to see a sister rescued from a possibly compromising position, and again, rescue is simply not on the heroine’s agenda.

In all three cases, the true gentleman acts in the best interests of those he loves and is responsible for, regardless of the inconvenience or cost to himself. Because Tremaine, Daniel, and Willow were honorable, I liked them. I trusted them, I wanted them to have the happiness they clearly already deserved.

In the Nicholas Haddonfield’s sisters—Nita, Kirsten, and Susannah—I found ladies willing to oblige my ambitions for these men. In each case, our hero has lessons yet to learn, and in each case, his inherent honor wins the day. He might not be handsome, wealthy, or charming in the eyes of the world, but because he’s a true gentleman in the eyes of his lady, he wins her true love.

I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I enjoyed writing them!

Book Writing Voodoo

While I've been researching ways to promote and sell the book I've already written I've seen a lot of blog posts and articles recommending that you as an author have several books out a once. This sounds like a great idea. It gives your readers a few options and it gives you an opportunity to let your readers sample some of your other works in order to sell more books. I get it, I really do.

But....

I cannot find anywhere on the internet exactly what kind of voodoo, hoodoo, hinky-jinky, black magic, devil spell authors are using to crank out books in such a hurry!

I've been working on my second book since right after I put the first one out in January. I'm not even half-way through the book. My characters do not seem to want to cooperate with the story line or I would be farther along than I am. I've been writing (almost) every day and I still have so much left to do before I can actually finish this story. And I've also been trying to write a prequel to The Letters, partly to draw more attention to the book and because I've had several people ask me about the characters in that book. It started out well but has kind of fizzled out so it's on a shelf right now just waiting for me to pick it back up.

I did all of that whining to say that....

Just kidding. You guys already knew that.

I do wonder, though, how writers can bust out five complete novels in the blink of an eye. How does that happen? And I know that some people have actually worked on those cluster of stories for a really long time and just decided to release them all at the same time but I'm talking about those writers who are publishing a new book every one to two months. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET? I really need to know what the secret is for slinging out stories like this. It's not even for the marketing aspect of it for me at this point. I'm genuinely curious to know how one does something like this. Is there a formula or something I'm missing? I need someone to enlighten me on this so that I can see if I am capable of it as well because right now I'm pretty much in Limbo while my characters are just screwing with me.

Do you have a special formula for cranking out book after book? Or are you struggling to get your next project out like I am? Do you know the voodoo spell?

Book Publishing Depression

When I finished my book at the end of NaNoWriMo last year I was incredibly excited. I was so proud of myself that I had finally, at long last, actually FINISHED a story and accomplished a goal. It may not seem like a big deal to you but to someone who is a chronic procrastinator and my own worst critic, it was incredibly satisfying to see that little screen saying that I had won. It was like being on a drug high. I was ecstatic!

While still riding that high I decided to use my coupon from NaNo to get to free paperback copies of my book from CreateSpace. And that is how The Letters was published. Like a premature little baby that was exactly quite ready for this world, I pushed it out there anyway. I was so proud and top of the world that I thought surely someone will read it and like it. Then came the pep talks to myself of "Well, even if no one else ever buys it, I wrote and published a book, which is something I've always wanted to do so there's that." And there it was, indeed.

I should have done more research beforehand instead of learning as a I go. I'm sure it would have made this process so much easier. But I didn't, and here we are and I'm not complaining because I've actually sold almost $100 worth of books and I had maybe $10 total invested in it?

But.....here I sit, researching ways to market this book and promote it and feeling not necessarily discouraged but depressed. That's the only way I can describe it. My book has gotten several good reviews. And those reviews were from people who didn't even know me! I've started on a prequel to The Letters to introduce more back story of some of the main characters but I can't seem to stay focused on it. A part of me just doesn't want to write about those characters anymore. At least not right now. The high has worn off and my inner critic has come back and all I can think about are all the things I have done wrong when it comes to this book and publishing it. Not to mention that I'm really on the fence about Amazon and I'm sliding more and more to the side of wanting to tell Amazon to suck it.

I just can't seem to get out of this funk where my book is concerned. I've got it on a few review sites. I've done some promotional pricing. I've done giveaways. I'm still researching how to do more but it just seems to depress me more. Don't get me wrong, I love The Letters and I'm proud of my writing. I'm just....in a funk?

Has anyone else had these feelings of depression after putting out a book? Am I being weird or is this a writer thing? If it's a writer thing, how do you overcome it? And as a bonus, what are your thoughts on Kindle Unlimited?

Writing Prompt Wednesday: Scorpion Swallower

Welcome to another Writing Prompt Wednesday!!

I found this week's inspiration on Pinterest. (I might have a slight addiction.) It was such a unique prompt that I couldn't resist using it for this week.

My Story:

Lemon, a loud-mouthed gnome sitting in the cell next to me, was beating on the iron bars with a sharp-edged rock he found in the corner of the cell. He'd been beating the same spot on a lower bar near the left side of the cell for nearly ten minutes now.

"What are you going to do when the guards catch you?"

"Drop the rock. For someone who is supposed to be a being of higher intelligence, you sure are stupid."

I scratched at the scabs on my wrist where Eric's fingernails scratched my skin as I had tried to get away from him. The fairy thought that I came to this world to kill him. I actually had ended up here by mistake. An accident, really.

"You're not a very nice troll."

"TROLL?" Lemon's eyes grew two sizes larger as he turned and screamed at me. "I'm not a frackin' troll! I'm a gnome!"

"A roaming gnome?"

He threw his rock at me. Evidently, Travelosity commercials were not very popular in this realm.

"I wish the guards would let me talk to Eric. If I could just explain to him how I got here and that I'm just trying to get home, maybe he'll let me out."

"You're going to try to reason with a man who swallows scorpions for fun? Did I mention you're stupid, already?"

"Well, anything sounds stupid when you say it like that."

Let's see what you've got! Send me your stories and yours could get featured next week!

~~SUMMARY~~
Bloodlines-3D-Paperback-eReaderFollowing the acclaimed debut of The Enemy Inside and its sequel, Broken, comes the stunning conclusion to the ‘Edge of Darkness’ series by investigative journalist Vanessa Skye, Blood Lines. Detective Alicia “Berg” Raymond is lying. She’s lying to the Chicago Police Department, to her boyfriend, Captain Jay O’Loughlin, but most of all, she’s lying to herself—about her past, her future, and her ongoing addiction. As Berg investigates a series of brutal rapes and sinks under an ever-increasing caseload, she finds herself juggling every aspect of her life—finding justice for victims of crime, keeping her own sordid past buried from her colleagues, struggling with blackmail that threatens to push her over the edge, and protecting her lover from the details of all of it. Wrapping her damaged head around living in a state of domestic bliss she’s certain she doesn’t deserve, Berg is driven by the need for justice and a determination to stop a rapist before any more innocent lives are ravaged. But when enemies from the past threaten her present, she is once again vulnerable to the demons that have plagued her every day of her life. It’s only a matter of time before her lies unravel and the fairy tale she’s finally started believing implodes . . . but the biggest threat of all, as it turns out, is her very own bloodline. Can she save herself, and the casualties of crime, from the lurking darkness waiting to strike, or will her own mistakes drag her under—this time for good?

~~ABOUT THE AUTHOR~~
vskyeVanessa Skye has always had a love of words and spent her school years writing poetry, speeches, and fictional essays. After completing a Bachelor of Arts in print journalism and studying psychology at Charles Sturt University, Vanessa got a job at Australia's largest publisher of regional and agricultural news and information, Rural Press, where she worked as a journalist in the central west of New South Wales for four years. Thousands of stories later, Vanessa decided to move back to Sydney and try her hand at public relations while studying for a master’s degree in communication. Skip forward a few years and Vanessa was once again joyfully studying various psychology subjects while managing a Sydney public relations firm. Enthralled with examining the motivations behind people’s actions, Vanessa realized what she really wanted to do in life was combine her love of words with her fascination for human behavior. So Vanessa quit public relations to begin the significantly more impoverished life of a professional writer. Inspired by a recurring dream, Vanessa wrote her crime fiction debut, The Enemy Inside, which challenges the concept of justice, asks if the need for vengeance sometimes justifies murder, and explores whether you can ever heal from childhood abuse. Broken is her second book in this series. In her spare time, Vanessa wrote a short story, The Piece, which was published in February 2012, by Dark Prints Press as a part of the 'One That Got Away' dark fiction anthology. Vanessa now works as a freelance writer, lives in Sydney’s northern beaches, and tries to immerse herself in salt water at least once a day.

Interview with Vanessa

  1. When did you first realise you wanted to write this series?

It’s a strange thing. I always wanted to write books, since I very, very small. But, I thought I’d write fantasy first, as that is a genre I’ve always loved. Of course, life got in the way and I worked in journalism and then PR.
About eight years ago, when I was working in PR, I started to have a strange reoccurring dream. In the dream I was writing the first chapter of a book. I had the rough plotline worked out in my head when I was having this dream. Well, this went on for about a year before I got tired of it and decided to just write this first chapter down to ‘get it out of my head’. I did, and the rest of the book followed. That ‘dream’ chapter is the first chapter of The Enemy Inside almost word for word.

  1. Did you have the full picture in your head from the start or did it develop over time?
It developed over time. With all three books, I had a rough idea of where they were going, but as I let the characters do their thing, the storylines changed.

  1. I understand that you are a journalist. How has this skill helped your writing?
Discipline and deadlines! I am very good at setting goals in terms of writing and achieving them, as that’s how I’ve been trained. But in terms of writing, journalism and fiction writing are completely different and I had to re-learn how to write when I started writing fiction.

  1. What sort of research did you have to do to get the crime aspect of this series correct?
So much research! I ordered textbooks galore: investigative techniques, interview techniques, forensics, criminology, law, psychology—you name it I’ve read it! Google helped too, of course, but I only used reputable sites. Crime fiction involves a lot of research. It’s fiction, but it has to be plausible in the real world, and readers of this genre are understandably picky.

  1. There are some really dark aspects of this novel, how did you get yourself in that dark frame of mind?
I used my own fight with depression to inspire Berg. I’ve had depression off and on since I was a teen, and Berg is a product of that. She is fighting depression, although it is not until the end of the first book, The Enemy Inside, that she knows what it is.

  1. Why are Bloodlines so important?
Bloodlines are very important and very hard to escape from, as Berg discovers in this third and final book. This is the book where she finally decides whether she’s going to let her past rule her, or move forward on her own terms. She has to lean that she is in charge of her own life and is not a slave to hers, or anyone’s, past.

7. What are you up to next?

I’ve got the first book in my paranormal romance series being released in May 2015, Koven, which is very exciting. Plus, I’ve just finished writing an erotic thriller, Evidence. I’ll just keep writing because I love it.

Bloodlines is the third and final book in the Edge of darkness crime fiction series.

Get the first eBook, The Enemy Inside, for only 99c between January 9-28 on Amazon, Kobo, and TWCS.

Broken is the second book in the series and is available in eBook and paperback on Amazon, Kobo, Book Depository, Barnes and Noble, TWCS and Booktopia.

Bloodlines will be released January 15, 2015, on Amazon, Kobo, Book Depository, Barnes and Noble, TWCS and Booktopia.

~~CONNECT WITH THE AUTHOR~~

Praise for Bloodlines
"So good! As with the previous two books in this series, I absolutely loved it. The pacing was great, there was nice dry humour to lighten the very dark tone, and all the characters completed a satisfying arc from books one and two. Berg in particular is fantastic – I loved that she didn’t completely go back to her old ways when she was at her lowest, and the ending leaves us with hope for her future. " - Andrea
